Admiring this new Zim Art stone carving from the Zim Gallery in Bailieboro, as I was sitting on the outdoor patio watching the world go by.

The new website was to changeover today but there seems to a glitch/hold up with our current service provider (not very sporting, I have to say)....elmhirst.ca is up and running but we had hoped to have elmhirst.com also up and running - we will keep both .ca and .com current, just in case. Thank you for your patience as we move into the new look and feel of our new cyber home. Anxious to hear your comments.....in the meantime, look out for the meteor shower (in the sky).

Toronto is buzzing with the Rogers Cup (Tennis) - our Canadians are upsetting the top seeds and providing good entertainment value. Sidney Crosby (hockey) and Roger Federer (tennis) celebrate their birthdays during a break in the action.

Our Blue Jays are hot, hot, hot - if you are in the city you should catch a game.

Armchair sports fans - come and join us in the Wild Blue Yonder for daily events and sports talk.....occasionally the talk will turn to flying but don't worry, the pilots have to be home by dark!

Enjoy the dog days of summer! Wish you were here.........

You just never know who will turn up for Lakeside Lunch.....I saw the Rolls and thought for sure it was Batman and Alfred. Wrong, but it was fun checking out the guests.

Anxiously awaiting the changeover of our new web site....we hope to transfer over on Wednesday night so the site may be down for awhile on Thursday. Please bear with us and wait for the new look.....I think you'll like it!

We met today to discuss the rates for 2011 and you will be delighted with the results. You asked for it so you shall receive a reward for being a Senior. Details to follow......all I can say is that if you stay midweek from September to June, for a minimum of 3 nights, you will save 25% on the rate.......

Fresh Ontario fruit from local markets - couldn't resist. Strolling down the stalls, visiting with your neighbours, sampling goodies and purchasing what you need to eat is a very civilized way to greet Saturday morning. Farmers Markets in Peterborough, Cobourg and Hastings are a favourite if you get out of bed early! Artisan breads and ethnic treats usually go quickly.

Woody Woodpecker dropped in for some peanuts today.....I waited for the laugh but he was too busy eating. The birds are starting to gather - isn't that a sign of autumn?

Rare sight - indoor swimming pool without any swimmers....doesn't happen often so I thought I would save the image.

It's been a lovely week - tomorrow will be sad as the international crowd says goodbye. See you all next year!

The Wild Blue Yonder crowd was concentrating hard on the numbers this afternoon (keeping cool as well) at the traditional Bingo with Wilma session. Lesson learned: Do not mess with Bingo. While this was happening the skies opened up and we had a monsoon rain (for mere minutes) before the sun came out again. So very Caribbean.

We had a preview of new desserts for the end of summer menu....OMG! Forget about the main course and go straight to dessert....trust me on this!

Despite the craziness of the day we managed a quick family celebration for Stephen's birthday....many happy returns.

Work, work, work....Donna Cane, innkeeper at The Victoria Inn (Gore's Landing - on the south side of Rice Lake) and Peter discussing the possibilities of a NorthShore initiative to create a Ring Around Rice Lake tour. After the meeting we enjoyed a lovely dinner on the patio with friends, entertained by the sunset, before boating home. After the storms of the afternoon, it was a perfect night - calm and cool - for being out on the lake.

It's been an active week on the Resort....just can't keep up with those badminton birdies....lots of action on the court. Tennis players galore....they look serious so beware.

Early morning view of the Resort from the fishing guide boat. Sleepy Hollow soon woke up and families headed up to the stables on the horsedrawn wagon for pony rides. Ellen had guests join her for the morning garden harvest; Ruth had interested parties for the egg gathering and waterskiing was busy.....it was quite the day.

Hunter is under the weather after an accident in the woods resulted in stitches across her back leg - her surgery was a success and it looks as though she will be in fine form soon. Guests are asking about her and of course we are missing her on our morning walk.

Thanks to all who supported our Bake Sale for The Arthritis Society today...we raised $100 for the cause and saw lots of smiles. Wilma is the greatest campaign manager ever!

The corn is as high as an elephant's eye......we've been enjoying local farm fresh peaches and cream corn for over a week....the cornfields are ridiculously high (sorry I couldn't find the Jolly Green Giant to give you perspective). You must stop at a farm on your way to the resort to get a few cobs of corn for dinner......peel and boil in water (8-10 min) or wet the dressed cob and throw it on the barbecue - apply salt and butter and sink your teeth into the best taste of the summer!

Be careful driving this busy long weekend....we'll be here enjoying the water (on the lake) and the garden harvest (zucchini bread was on the menu yesterday).

It certainly has been a good week for romantics - the evening sky has provided a lovely colour palette and the cooler temperatures make it great for sleeping. You may be lucky enough to get a cottage for the weekend....why wouldn't you want to be by the lake with your family? If you weren't invited to the Clinton wedding you can always hang out here, with us....we'll have cake.

This osprey just returned to the nest with a large fish for the young'uns....he's giving me the evil eye...thinking I might be hungry for a bite of fish. It's amazing to watch the osprey swoop into the lake and emerge, fish in mouth....don't try this!

Our own Red Fife Wheat swaying in the breeze....just about ready for harvest - watch for breads, doughnuts and tasty wonders yet to be imagined. Locally, the story of Red Fife Wheat is important as it was the first wheat found to be resistant to rust (disease) - eventually finding its way across Canada with the settlers.

It's been awhile since I walked through Sunday Brunch as Stephen and his team were setting up ......I'd forgotten how inviting the different tables look - Jay (with roast in hand) was getting ready with his carving section and the crepe/waffle/omelette area. Highly recommended and popular, you will need a reservation for Brunch.

Peter is injured so I took his turkey chores today....can't stop smiling as this looked like a disco scene.....guys up in the balcony watching the girls on the dance floor....anyone else see that? Don't worry, it could just be the full moon, which looks lovely reflected on the water this evening.

It's July 25 already....better book your summer getaway soon!

Ted Hughes and his solar-powered boat Sparks moored with us overnight...many boat enthusiasts toured the homebuilt vessel, which was launched June 22, 2010. Johnny Walker, first mate, former Bluenose sailor, was delighted to help navigate. Very Humphrey Bogart.....

At the end of the day, the waterski dock is a sad place as the weekly guests say their goodbyes - this is where they have socialized and performed their best ski moves of their vacation. Meet you here next year!

It was single malt scotch tasting night at the Kloosterman's - the second in a series of tastings designed to choose a favourite - or not! It's serious business but the guys seem to be enjoying the task. Several single malt scotch selections are available in the Wild Blue Yonder.

How excited and proud can you possibly be about your tomato plants? I'm pretty happy with my crop. I think the trick is adding TUMS to the soil (tip from gardener Bob). Basil planted around the tomatoes brings the great flavours together. The fresh produce harvested from the garden is being served in the dining room - check it out! How's your garden doing?

What's happening? More and more people are jumping in the lake to cool off.....I hope the osprey can tell the difference between guests and muskie.

Hunter and I started training today for the 10 km walk in Athens, Greece in late October....the hills and the humidity are challenging, as are the deer flies. We were told to keep a sheet of Bounce fabric softener on our necks to ward off the hungry deer flies....we'll let you know after our next training session. This could be the answer for those campfire nights......

Full house at the Martens.....great mosquito catchers (they are staff members responsible for bug control). You will see them at various locations on the resort property. This past month we had some honey bees (waiting for the Queen Bee to decide on a hive), bats who were in training for insect control and a flotilla of geese with their young. Add that to the herons, osprey and eagle fishing and you have a 3-D nature show - all you have to do is recharge your drink and enjoy!

Early morning on the lake....before the fishing begins. We were fortunate to miss the storms that flooded and damaged many areas north of us. The new waterski dock is ready to go in the water.....could it get any better?

Peterborough Lift Lock, a must-see on your visit to Peterborough. Built in 1904 the lock is the highest hydraulic lift in the world. It's amazing to see the boats transfer from one level to the canal.....there is also a Visitor Centre at Lock 21.

Just the usual here at the Resort with archery, boating, tubing and waterskiing, fishing, horseback riding and sightseeing flights....nothing newsworthy, just people enjoying the great outdoors. It's very relaxing....join us!

We managed to escape to our wilderness camp for the night(accessible by air only) where we waited out the thunder storm. Peter managed to respond to all his email....be prepared. The lake is so serene and the fishing is good....why not get away yourself and book a half day in the wilderness? Half day with a guide or overnight available.

Sunday was at it's finest with action on the waterfront and in the restaurants (patio included) - of course all eyes were on the World Cup final - great entertainment value - with Spain scoring in the second overtime segment. Whatever shall we do now that the World Cup is over?

Speaking of South Africa, today we loaded the adventure bikes on the ship container bound for Cape Town. Peter and I will be travelling with an intrepid troupe through South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwae and Botswana in September - after all the logistics and planning, loading the bikes made it real. Peter will ride his bike (shown above) and I have the option of being a passenger on the bike or in the chase vehicle...I'll be sure to share our exploits with you!

Old friends reminiscing on the good old days of vacations past - Dave Saxe and Peter took a break to sample some wine and get caught up on their lives. Dave and his family were regular guests at the resort over the years - Peter and Dave became friends 57 years ago and have remained in touch - Dave is a great follower of all things Rice Lake and I have always appreciated his dedication to my blog. These two may look world-weary but they seemed young as they were laughing and recalling wonderful memories....don't we all wish we had a buddy to relive our youth with?

Update on my Prince.....he wouldn't even look at the angel....how long can I possibly resist him?

After 52 years of cottage life on Rice Lake, June and Gord Salmon have sold their cottage. This evening their neighbours held a farewell potluck dinner to say goodbye. A Shawn Whalen print of the area was presented. There was lots of story-telling and laughter.

Three generations enjoy a last look at Rice Lake, where they have spent their summers over the years. It was such a lovely send-off, I can't imagine we won't see the Salmon family again.

The temperature today hit 33 degrees Celsius...and it was hot! The hay bales made it to the barn before the rain - take that off the list of least desirable tasks on a hot, humid day. Our guests were happy to get wet today - in the lake for tubing and waterskiing or by the pool.

What a lovely day for the Vintage Boat Classic. Peter paddles his mother (93 yrs) in the cedar strip canoe built by his dad in 1989 - it was a nostalgic ride.

The Paterson War Party (family and friends) paddled in unison and looked like they were enjoying themselves!

Jim Stewart, Chairman of the Board at the Canadian Canoe Museum stands proudly beside the Vagabond, Farley Mowat's boat, donated to the museum.

Peter, Hunter and Dave Saxe take a spin in one of the Elmhirst Anglers, rental boat of the 1970's on the Resort - they went to Keene and back without incident...we used people years, not dog years, for their qualifying tally of over 100 years (combined boat and captain).

John Summers, General Manager of the Canadian Canoe Museum, sailed in the Clementine, looking very serene and in control.

The First Annual Vintage Boat Classic Paddle was won by the Knapp's in their slick Meander. A donation of $500 was given to the Canadian Canoe Museum for future programming. I look forward to seeing you all next July 03 for the second annual Classic.

The day ended with fireworks for our American friends....Happy 4rth of July!

Fishing for bass seems to appeal to boat potatoes (those who sit) and keeners (those who stand-with a sitting option). Both appear to be successful.

Sunshine brings out the laughter in the pool - the happy screams of the waterski crowd and more chess players on the patio....lots of sunburned faces from an afternoon of golf or horseback riding....based on the yawns at the outdoor movie it was a busy day for all! Our Argentinian guests are hopeful of tomorrow's World Cup game - the Wild Blue Yonder will be the place to catch the action and the drama!

Sad goodbyes to our weekly guests, greetings to the weekenders who successfully fled the city and welcome back to our old friends. Don't forget to swing by on Sunday to catch some vintage boats and old sailors.....Peter has taken his dad's canoe off the wall in the main building for the occasion.

If it's Wednesday, it must be horsedrawn wagonride day....the wagon tours the Resort, then heads up to the stables where pony rides are offered and photo ops abound!

It was a nice day to tour Norwegian guests in Prince Edward County (a wonderful oasis of wine and cheese trails). Here's Peter with the intrepid anglers at Buddha Dogs in Picton - our favourite drop in spot for cool dogs and sodas.

After devouring several pounds of cheese at Fifth Town and Black River Artisan Cheese Shops we headed to the Norman Hardie Winery for a tasting - who should we meet there but Martina and Greg with guests from Ohio, Doug and Cynthia Woehrmyer. Small world!

One last look at the waves rolling into the beach at Sandbanks and home we headed. Great spot for a picnic. We have maps and information at the Front Desk if you want to take a day trip to Prince Edward County (affectionately known as The County).

Enroute to Toronto this afternoon I witnessed the crowds at each overpass on the Highway of Heroes (a section of Hwy 401 has been designated the Highway of Heroes to commemorate Canada's fallen soldiers who have died fighting in Afghanistan. Crowds gather to witness the procession from Trenton to Toronto). It was hoped that the route, marked with red poppies, would encourage Canadians to reflect on the sacrifices our Armed Forces have made. The route was so named in 2007 - the crowds were amazing and it was very touching! My apologies for the blurry photos - I was driving as I snapped.

I was on my way to my first TMAC meeting (Travel Media Association of Canada) as a new board member. The CN Tower reminded me that many of our guests will be passing through Toronto on their way to the Resort - it's worth a trip up the Tower if you haven't been. The elevators are handy (I climbed the stairs for a WWF fundraiser one year...it's high!)

Lush gardens seem to be overtaking the buildings....
It was an interesting day with periods of torrential rain and muggy sunshine. The little turkeys are noisy, the chickens head for the shade; the horses and cattle are happy with the juicy grass and the birds are chirping away.....spotted a kingfisher yesterday!
Dinner this evening was an international affair with teens from Arizona and adventurers from Norway - six degrees of separation works with even the most diverse groups.

Long weekend almost here.....don't forget the Vintage Boat Classic on Sunday - I heard the Vagabond (Farley Mowat's boat) will be on display. Book Brunch and see the classics (boats and captains alike). If you want a family outing check out the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough (there's a Tim Horton's right beside the museum - how Canadian is that?).

The rain held off long enough to get almost through Act I of the 4th Line Theatre dress rehearsal this evening.....the outdoor theatre features wonderful plays about local events - my first introduction was the Cavan Blazers (which will be back in the 2011 line-up). The Port Hope story (this year) involves the processing of radium for medical use - I'm going back to find out what transpired in this story! If you are travelling to the Kawarthas you really should check out the schedule and try to catch a performance - the setting sun is the curtain and the entertainment value is high! My photo of the stage area gives you some idea of the scope.

It's the first day of bass season and the heron is letting the anglers find breakfast first......winning strategy! Lots of boats out this morning before the fog rolled in and the downpour began.

Not even a little rain could dampen the spirits of Jennifer and Blaine Down, who celebrated their wedding today. Congratulations!

The full moon was peeking through the branches - in anticipation of the Clarke-Down wedding tomorrow. Very romantic!

Hunter studies the birdfeeder after spotting a rogue squirrel enjoying the peanuts meant for the little birds. The squirrel takes refuge in the feeder proper.....

Busted.......a giant leap to escape the dog and the birds who are now upset.....the squirrel escaped unharmed, the dog is still sniffing the deck and the birds are having a snack. All is good in nature.

No obvious damage from the winds last night - today was extremely humid with some wind. The gardens are looking lush and I'm told by Gardener Bob the flowers are too advanced - he's worried the blooms won't last until August. Just noticed a few cottages available for the long weekend......will you be joining us?

Peter was able to fuel up and fly out before the high winds - he is heading north with his fishing buddies from Guelph and Norway....northern skies will be restricted tomorrow due to the G8 - tornado warnings make the trip more challenging - the weather forecast north is for snow squalls....can't wait to hear the fishing stories. Safe travels!
The chickens seem to be discussing the tremors just after 1:30 pm today....reports of an earthquake registering 5.5 created alot of talk (but thankfully no damage). This evening we are waiting out high winds, thunderstorms and tornado warnings. Standby for outcome reports.

The Beatles live on with the Elmhirst Rockband group at the employee summer kick-off this evening. Several staff tried their hand at drums or guitar, Henry was the supreme vocalist and even the wanna-be rocker guests were thrilled with the entertainment value. Between training, conferences and regular guests we try to have one night of silliness (we succeed big time). Now that we are experienced rockband stars we look forward to hearing you in the Wild Blue......are you up to the challenge?

We managed to get more hay bales off the field this morning before the big rain - as the sun sets it's clear and fresh.....good fishing tomorrow.

Training has started for my Athens, Greece marathon in November - not only am I walking and trying to get in shape for the event, I am eating Greek, with friends, of course. Today we gathered for a Greek food fest on the lawn - our gracious hostess Glenda had prepared a full menu of authentic goodies. Only true friends would insist on acclimatizing you to the culinary challenges you will face when away from home.

Please be on the lookout for the turtles crossing the road when you are driving out of Keene....I flashed my lights at a delivery truck today and the driver slowed down and veered around the ambitious turtle. You know who you are.....thanks. As you leave Keene, don't forget to pick up your fresh strawberries at Nelsons Berry Farm. The berries are smaller than the imports but very delicious.

It's haying season so Albert and Peter were busy baling and stacking tonight.....just in case it rains tomorrow. Happy Solstice to all! (keep the howling down)

It was a perfectly lovely Father's Day. On arrival at Brunch each Dad was presented a medal for being such a winning father. I hope you were able to spend time with your Dad today.
Later this afternoon we headed out to Sandy Beach for a picnic and some beachcombing - we were lucky to spot the loon - he didn't seem too worried about us!

Have you got World Cup fever? The Wild Blue Yonder is the place to watch the action - there has been an international cheering section for each game....making it very interesting and maybe a little loud!

Visitors from Argentina checking out the possibilities of future fishing vacations on Rice Lake - enroute to a Rotary Conference in Montreal they stopped to tour the area with their winter neighbours who live in Keene in summer (Ron and Viviana Mackay). Very cosmopolitan, don't you think?

My apologies for not posting anything yesterday - it was raining cats and dogs, on and off, all day - I never seemed to have a camera when I saw the kids playing in the pool, laughing on the horsedrawn wagonride, jumping in the puddles or riding bikes. I missed the Tasting and Tapas on The Patio as well as the arrival of the new hens! I was just a step behind all day....and to top it off, it was too dark to take a photo of the loon I could hear just outside the house. We did Nordic pole walk in a drizzle and I think local merchants were busy with shoppers.

Today was gorgeous - lots of young pony riders, the waterfront was bustling and of course, BINGO was popular. I can't say if campfire will be a happening place tonight - the diehard fishing crowd likes to fish late and get up early. Let's see what tomorrow brings!

Today was Be a Firefighter Day at the Peterborough Fire Station. Several of us purchased the day at a charity auction - who knew it would be so much fun!

Once we were dressed in our bunker suits, complete with air masks and tanks (those suits are heavy, then add 30 lbs of air) we walked up a dark stairwell to practise how we would enter a burning building - good workout just walking with the weight. Trying to look nonchalant in the heat of a crisis isn't easy when you hear yourself breathing heavy.

Climbing the 100' ladder on the truck...what a rush! As we took the final steps off the truck we were rescued (or saved) by a firefighter......oh yeah! During our visit there were several emergency calls and our hosts disappeared to help those in need.....returning safely and without having to use the big equipment. The calls are varied and are not always actual fires.

Here I am learning to roll out the hose (just like bowling) before we connected a few and watered the parking lot....the firefighters could not have been more friendly and patient with us!

Beautiful day with beautiful people as the Dragon Boat Festival ended on a high note. My team were ferocious in their races and I did see a bit of competitive spirit, although it's all about the fun and teamwork. The flower ceremony at noon, to honour those who have lost their battle with breast cancer, was emotional and spiritual.....all the boats congregate in the water and the sweepers (steerers) hold hands to keep the boats together while they recognize a moment of silence for their lost teammates and hear some very chilling hymns. The human pink knot was amazing and the doves released into the sky were very effective. I truly enjoyed my experience with these brave souls and learned alot about breast cancer and the support systems in place. It was a great weekend and I was privileged to be a volunteer and play a small role. If you haven't had the opportunity to watch the races or hear the story of how dragon boating became the sport of choice, please add it to your list of must-do's.

The Patio was lovely tonight - what a nice way to wrap up a busy weekend.

The day was wet but the Spirits (that's my team) were high and it turned into a great day of racing and laughter at the Dragon Boat Festival in Peterborough.

Back at the Resort, the place was hopping with a beautiful wedding and the annual Lobsterfest Party.

Summer begins for us this week, as our wonderful longtime American families arrive with generations in tow. So much catching up to do!

Peterborough welcomes the world to the International Dragon Boat Festival - over 2,000 delegates are here to create awareness for breast cancer and to paddle their dragon boats.

The delegates parade down George Street was well attended by the people of Peterborough (I was very proud) who came out, dressed in pink, to cheer and show support. I was delighted to accompany my team, Australia Abreast Spirit, in the parade. As their local Ambassador I was busy with errands and supplying information.

The South African team led a dance at the evening concert and opening ceremonies. I did introduce myself so we could connect when I get to Cape Town in the fall. I'm telling you it was a large love-in with many languages and lots of pink - great energy!

I'll be back tomorrow to make sure my team does well in their race heats. Lots of courage and optimism in the air.

Greg Elmhirst and Chef Sterpin check out the next course coming off the barbecue at the Winemakers Dinner on Sunday. The backyard barbecue event, a six course affair, paired with wines from John Howard Cellars of Distinction was held on the boardwalk and in the Enterprise Room, overlooking the lake. The Arthritis Society was the recipient of just shy of $1,600 from the proceeds of a silent auction. Thank you to those who participated in the fun and went home with great gift packages.

Despite the threat of rain, the view remained as splendid as ever. One of the guests mentioned the energy in the room...it was a gregarious group of foodies and wine lovers.....all the right ingredients for a successful evening. Let's do it again!

The Second Annual Eastern Ontario Adventure Rally started with a hearty breakfast, designating groups based on experience or routing and then a revved-up departure for a day of riding -and what a day it was!

Tomorrow heralds the second annual Eastern Ontario Adventure Rally with bikers from across the province arriving to camp/cottage for a weekend of riding with a group of like-experienced, on and off road riders. The routes have been pre-determined and this gang provides an easy mix of fun and tall tales. Welcome back! Last year the group assembled for a morning photo (shown here) before hitting the trails.

The moon was burning through the trees tonight but try as I might I couldn't get the camera to co-operate so it looks like a study of the tree trunk....I expect to hear howling after midnight.

I hope you are enjoying the high temperatures and sunshine - ideal weather for a resort vacation..........need I say more?

Woke up to a racket on the shore....the ducks were disturbed, the water was churning - it was the carp trolling along the shoreline. The water is so clear it was easy to point out the sunfish and the carp. As I sat on the dock I was treated to the wildlife show with herons, osprey, water creatures and Hunter trying to figure out what was going on!

Walking in Winnipeg I found another torch bearer on the top of the

Manitoba Legislature - Golden Boy (really gold), carrying a torch and a sheaf of wheat, is an icon here. I am attending Rendez Vous Canada, a trade show for buyers of Canadian product. It's wonderful to see our partners and to meet new travel industry folks who are keen on selling us in their markets.

Across from my booth (yes, I'm working) the Royal Canadian Mint features the Olympic Medals - Mounties are available for photos (you must wear white gloves to touch the medals). A steady stream of interested parties flow through to see, touch and be photographed with the beautiful medals. In retrospect I should have brought my torch to the booth. The Olympic memories live on!

Happy Birthday to Peter Elmhirst (Sunday is the day but I thought you would want to call with best wishes). I would never reveal his age but I did offer to take him on a road trip down Route 66 to celebrate.

Retirement isn't that staid as Peter is busy with the farm, flying and making sure every rogue tree on property is replanted somewhere. In his spare time he rides his motorcycle, searching for the least travelled routes.

The new EDO 2000 floats are on FET (Piper Cub used for float training) so let the lessons begin!

Haircut for the trees along the waterfront by the superior cottages....allowing for lovely breezes and better views of the lake. The roadway was not safe from the clippers either....opening up the lane and providing more firewood. It was a sad day but I know the results will please you on arrival.

We had some rain this past weekend, lovely rainbows and amazing skies. Now the grass is out of control and the trees are budding...the cover is off the outdoor pool and the grounds are looking fine for Mother's Day.

Today it feels like the sun and the wind are playing that game we read about as kids...enough with the wind!

Early morning light was too amazing not to share with you.

The moon on the water last night was mesmerizing...good start for the young couple getting married today.

La familia Marten have returned from the south...the martens are welcome guests as they control the insect population. I snapped this photo with my phone, I was talking on the phone and couldn't hear because the birds were so noisy...sorry for the quality.

As I was walking I noticed the Red Fife Wheat was peeking through the ground...how exciting! We continue to grow what we need to provide the freshest local produce - from our beef to our wheat to our vegetables....I think a goat (cheese) would complete the package. Any other thoughts?

The sunset tailgate picnic outside the Burnbrae Church was just the beginning of a wonderful evening of comedy - local would-be stars perform skits in the church (to raise money for repairs) and then invite the audience to a homemade pie social (all you can eat).... perfect ingredients for a great night out!

For 16 years the St Hilda's graduating class of 1965 (nursing) have stayed with us...we love these ladies. I think they're getting younger each year! Where's Wilma?

Today the seaplane dock went into the water....just in time for float endorsements.

Despite the sunshine the boiler is needed to warm the pool water - over the years we have burned cardboard, wood pallets, corn and now oat hulls (breakfast cereal leftovers). How very green!

Vintage Boat Classic applications are now available for those who wish to join us on July 04 - age of the captain and the boat must add up to more than 100 years - what wonderful boats we will see....okay, I guess there will be some wonderfully rugged captains as well! Walking by the wooded area at the henhouse, I saw my first trillium of the season. This is the official flower of Ontario - grows in the woods in early spring.
I was corrected today as I mentioned we had 600 plants ready to go into the garden....my error, we have 6000 plantings for the grounds. The missing 0 was very big!
Despite the snow flakes today the colour was almost neon around the pool.

Waking up to the swarms of ducks and geese can be unsettling....apparently they are resting here (even the birds know you can relax at Elmhirst's Resort) as they continue their journey north. We expect them back in the fall - as they head south. They certainly are social! Feels like a scene from the movie "The Russians Are Coming".

Great wind today for a kiting adventure....I found it chilly on shore, can't imagine how fresh the water was!

The ritual of wheeling the docks back into the water is made easier by the large wheels on the docks....every fall we take the docks out as the ice in Rice Lake pushes up on shore and would wreck the docks. The main dock is 106' long, yet it takes only 30 minutes to drive it across the runway and into place. The water level seems low for this time of year but we have had virtually no rain and there wasn't much snow melt in the early spring. The dock is in place for those avid anglers waiting to get out for a feed of panfish.

Addendum: Backyard Barbecue Winemakers Dinner will be held on Sunday June 06 so we can take advantage of the afternoon sun. John Howard Cellars of Distinction will be featured along with a tasty grilled menu. You won't want to miss this event!

It's spring and the lines on the tennis court are being repainted....no excuses now.

Hair flying everywhere at the barn....meet Angela Corby, our Trail Guide. Angela has been working the horses, getting the kinks out, lungeing and riding so they are ready for summer rides - they get lazy over the winter (grazing and taking it easy). When I arrived Majestic was munching on Angela's hair while Skye tried to chew the lead shank (no more work). This is called horseplay!

Bob Phillips, our gardener, was in the greenhouse today sharing his plans (and plants) with Ellen Sweeney, a recent graduate of the Niagara College Horticulture Program. Ellen has joined our team to increase production in the vegetable garden and cottage gardens. There are thousands of seedlings waiting to be planted outdoors....the weather has been so wonderful it's difficult to understand why the gardens are not in full bloom.

Peter Elmhirst of Elmhirst's Resort was awarded the Ontario Hostelry Institute Gold Award this evening at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto. The family was on hand to celebrate the award for Hotelier presented to Peter at a Gala Dinner. It was quite an honour - Congratulations!
The Ontario Hostelry Institute endeavours to create bursaries for hospitality students as well as recognizing excellence and furthering development in the hospitality industry.

It was a windy day on the hilltop, these horses hid behind the barn and found green grass in the sunshine. The calves were running with/at Hunter, creating some nervous moments for their moms, who are very protective. The osprey team are nicely outfitting their nest with straw and boughs....I sat on the bench at the top of the trail and observed all the action going on (tried to take photos with my phone but it was windy and the shots are shaky). You are so going to love the observation bench!

Last night was Womens Network Night at the Resort...lots of wine, desserts, good chatter,and sales of jewellery, wrap around skirts, candles and services....it was a great night! Martina spioke enthusiastically about the Spa renovations and it didn't take long for the women to network and pass along new business contacts and opportunities. Many cards were passed and emails exchanged. Lots of laughter and antics - it just didn't seem right to post photos of the group....too much explanation required, especially at the wrap-around skirt demos.

Things are coming together for the Vintage Boat Classic on July 04....enter your vintage boat (boat and captain must add up to over 100 years) for the dockside walkabout and enter the Poker Run for prizes and glory. Entry fee includes a wrap up barbecue as well. Great day out on the lake for boat owners and spectators alike.

Coming soon.....pets allowed in certain cottages; June backyard barbecue event with wine and beer tasting; Kawartha Fall Colour Cycling Tour in Oct; Wild Women's Weekend (for those hunting season widows) - lets have a pajama party! So many reasons to come and see us!

The runway is busy with flying farmers, weekend pilots, helicopters and ultralight pilots....fly in for breakfast or lunch Mon-Sat or Sunday Brunch. There's always someone to talk flying with. If you fly in for dinner on the outdoor patio we'll be sure to get you out before sundown.

The osprey is back and a bench has been strategically placed under the old oak so you now have a destination on the hilltop where you can stop for a break and catch the view. Thanks to Barb and Marvin Wourms for the suggestion.

Another glorious day on Rice Lake...the birds were back at the feeder, the horses were luxuriating in the pasture (sunning and chomping on the new grass) while the cattle welcomed more new calves.

We were delighted to have the the quilters return - they work like bees, hardly come up for meals. I did hear laughter so I'm thinking it's a labour of love.

Some things are just universal....Ron Mackay sent this photo of his Argentinian farm workers after the harvest - please note the rabbit ears - we North Americans thought we owned that trick....not so! Any other worldwide phenomena you want to share?

Sunny but windy on Rice Lake today - a perfect spring day with a shower at dusk. Expect to see green grass soon.

The new Rice Lake Guide (a collectors item) is out and will be available at the front desk early in the week - a sure sign of spring.

If you want to see birds, get in the car and drive to R R #1, Keene.....I think there must be a G99 Summit of Chirpers, right here in our backyard. Binoculars ready?
