Scary Halloween night with witches, devils, skeletons and space invaders...candy was gratefully accepted by all the ghoulish characters, making it a safe and happy evening. The weather co-operated and the moon was lovely on the lake.....don't forget to turn your clock back so you get that extra hour of sleep.

The Friday Night Supper Club enjoyed Grandma's Wild Rice Pudding and poetry this evening in the Wild Blue Yonder Pub. Johnnie Walker set the standard with his favourite English poems of the sea; Ron MacKay, Jim Stewart and Peter Elmhirst read Robert Service to rave reviews. It was very 60's although the Leafs were playing in the background rather than a jazz band, there was no smoke in the room and we were all high on friendship. Great night - I'm sure you wish you were there!

Get ready for Goblins and Ghouls tomorrow night. Don't forget the time change this weekend. Oh and wasn't it exciting to see the Olympic Flame arrive in Victoria?

It threatened rain today so FET, our Piper Cub, was taken out of the water for the season. Skis will replace the floats for winter flying off the ice on the lake. For some reason it seems sad to see the plane make it's way to the hangar.

Meanwhile in the woods I could hear the voices of the resort gang, hiding from the reported Zombies....Halloween and active imaginations rule!

Exciting news....tomorrow morning the Olympic Torch will arrive in Victoria, British Columbia, from Athens, for it's amazing cross country journey.....we will see the Torch on December 16 in Lakefield.

There have been many calls for the Winemakers Weekend....yes,it is possible to join the group for Saturday dinner and overnight with Sunday Brunch - $149 per person plus taxes. See you there!

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Last Friday at the Supper Club it was decided that the group would share their favourite poems - Robert Service won the toss and you can expect to hear rather theatrical renditions on Oct 30 in the Wild Blue Yonder. All are welcome!

Viviana and Ron, pictured here, at a recent dress rehearsal for Friday. Applause filled the room - and that was just a practise run. Hope to see you there!

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Hope this wasn't a guest of ours.....probably too much partying at Keene Pumpkin Festival.
Still have space on the Wild Women Weekend Nov 13 and on the Winemakers Weekend Nov 20 - book now and don't be disappointed. Don't you deserve a getaway?

Autumn, Indian Summer and beautiful days continue on Rice Lake. Condolences to the Galea family as they said goodbye to Matriarch Lucy today - she will be missed but not forgotten.

Sunday, October 25, 2009

It was a colourful day with sunshine and bright leaves...perfect for walking in the woods, on the waterfront and across the fields -it didn't matter where you looked, it was beautiful!

Brunch was hopping with family groups, scrapbooking enthusiasts, writers, fundraiser support groups and an anniversary party for Gerry and Fern Anderson....hope we see you for your special occasion soon.

Happy Keene Pumpkin Festival Day- the Kawartha Credit Union staff and Mouldy Nelson were dressed and ready to join the fun this morning, just before the parade. It was cloudy but nothing could dampen the spirits of the community as they came out to celebrate. Dogs, kids of all ages, runners and walkers were out for the festivities. There was even a corn maze for families to get lost in.....plan to be here next year!

When you wake up to a sky that looks like a painting, how could you not have a great day?
As we collect leaves, get ready for the first snowfall, plan holiday packages and finalize the celebration of New Years Eve I am personally very excited about carrying the Olympic Torch in Lakefield on December 16. Peter has offered to buy my torch (Christmas gift)- we'll have it on display for all to see, keeping the spirit of the Games alive right here in Keene.

Glorious day with a wonderful red sky (photo taken as I was driving home) - if you need a getaway come and see us -we're expecting more great weather this week!

Wilma sent me a better photo of the John Somerville Monster Muskie catch...heavy duty.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

What a day....there was a lovely wedding on the waterfront (very civilized, this getting married on Sunday afternoon). Several more sightseeing flights to catch the last of the colours.

It seems incredible to be thinking about holiday specials and taking Christmas Dinner reservations when the sun is shining so bright....call and ask about our "One angel stays free for the holidays" special. In the meantime, enjoy the great weather we are promised for the week.
Another brilliant day with guests making the most of the great outdoors.

This evening was the Beaver Club Gala, a fundraiser for the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough. Voyageur-costumed canoe enthusiasts enjoyed a meal of wild boar and feted the historic gathering. The Museum is worth seeing when visiting the area - the collection alone is impressive.

The Farmers Market with fresh apples and vegetables is a great place to hang out, especially when the sun is shining and the air is crisp.....not another word from me on the marvellous fall weather we are having!

Last weekend I featured this photo of the Monster Muskie caught by John Somerville and his sons Justin and Sandy - the muskie was 45" long and weighed in at 25lbs - surely that's a winning catch in the Big Fish Competition! On reading John's capture story I was reminded of a greeting card I saw recently: Catch a fish for a man and he will eat for a day; Teach a man to fish and he will talk about the catch over and over again. John Somerville first came to the Resort 54 years ago with his family....it was delightful to have him return with his family and carry on the tradition of fishing with his sons. Good luck in the competition John. If you have a better photo of MM please send it and I'll replace this lounge shot.

Yes, it's that time again....preparing for winter, the docks must come out as the frost will heave them. Ron is a master of movement as he takes each dock out, checks it for repairs and parks it out of the way of snowmobilers and skiers.
Sunshine again....the colours remain....another wonderful day in the country!

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Cool day with sunshowers and spectacular views of coloured landscape. Many seasonal resorts will be closing today....we are getting ready for more conferences, great November weekends and the first frost.

If you haven't received our Fall Newsletter call 1-800-461-1940 and we'll eblast it out to you. Almost time for the Keene Pumpkin Festival.

Monster muskie caught by John Somerville - nice catch, released. This is a contender for the Big Fish Contest.

What a wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend. It was refreshing to see families enjoying being together. If you missed Thanksgiving maybe we'll see you at Christmas.

Sunday, October 11, 2009

Kathleen and Jason were in for Brunch today to celebrate their first anniversary - they were married here last year with a traditional Thanksgiving feast. It was great to see them - they are expecting their first child in mid-December. Happy thoughts and best wishes from all of us.
What a gorgeous sunny fall day...guests canoeing, walking, flying, riding, golfing, enjoying the patio, playing tennis and horseshoes....some visited the Norwood Fair.

Katie and Spirit were out on the trail, enjoying the sunshine and the views from the hill.

Visiting aircraft couldn't have chosen a better day for flying in and stopping for lunch!

Friday, October 9, 2009

Viviana enjoying the home-grown turkey special in the Wild Blue Yonder tonight.
It was a rainy day but spirits were high at our annual staff Thanksgiving luncheon - we enjoy a traditional turkey feast before the weekend guests arrive - it's a lovely way to start the holiday - we have so much to be thankful for!

The fall menu was introduced tonight - making the most of local produce - you must try the perch!

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Meet our welcome committee at the front door - they don't speak.
Hard to believe it was fall today with temperatures as high as 20 degrees Celsius (72 F).
We're ready for Thanksgiving....lots of turkey and pumpkin pies, recreation program set with experiences for all and the Norwood Fair is on! (a wonderful country fair).

So catch a fish, ride a bike, swim, workout, go riding or sightseeing, take a guided ATV Safari, get your last golf game in, watch the birds or do nothing at all, except eat! We'll be looking for you.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

We said good bye to Swiss pilot Hansreudi Aeschbach, leaving after his 68th visit to the Resort. Hansreudi was here in June and we hope to see him again in January. Affectionately known as "Mr Toblerone" he is always welcome.
It was a perfectly windy fall day, with sprinkles of rain....the reward was a glowball moon and sky full of bright constellations. I'm watching for the Northern Lights.
Thank you to all our wonderful guests who have given Wilma such positive encouragement for her nomination as Employee of the Year. You're the best!

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Do you ever get tired of seeing the autumn colours? I find myself driving along, stopping to take yet another photo of the sun catching the leaves. Peter has been busy with fall colour flying tours - add lunch or horseback riding and you have a great gift for the wanna-be adventurer in your life.
The turkeys were shipped today - it was sad but I did not make eye contact! If you are travelling for Thanksgiving, have a safe journey.

Monday, October 5, 2009

Oh what a day...sunny with showers; sold out Lakeside Luncheon; more fall colour flights and a rainbow over the resort to top it off. The turkeys are enjoying their last night at the Resort.

The clouds were pink and fluffy (almost eerie)and the full moon on the water was breathtaking. How lucky we are to live on Rice Lake.

Saturday, October 3, 2009

Sunshine, rain storm, sunshine and beautiful rainbows marked the day on Rice Lake. The sun was shining so bright on the wet roads it was difficult to see. Sending best wishes to Linda and Bill Hughes who renewed their vows today, at the celebration of their 40th Anniversary. There was a double rainbow in the sky to commemorate your special day.
Congratulations to Lisa and Brian, married October 02. The Elmhirst family attended the magnificent celebration and were so proud of Lisa. It was a delight to see the Fan family and join in the festivities. So much food, so much fun, a mix of traditions and lots of good chi. All the best to the young couple.
